ON HALLOWEEN....By Maureen Timm
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (prounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and Northern France celebrated their New Year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

It is variously called a fall front, a drop front, a slant front, slant top, drop lid, Governor Winthrop and lots of other things but they all refer to a specific kind of writing platform we know as a "desk" or even as a secretary.

For serious autograph collectors the Swann Auction Galleries autograph auctions are an important event. Even for collectors who can't afford $20,000.00 or more for an historical document signed by George Washington or the offering of a small American flag carried by Charles Lindbergh, on the Spirit of St. Louis during his 1927 trans-Atlantic flight, along with a typed note signed by him, that could sell for up to $60,000, the Swann autograph auctions are eagerly awaited.

Q. I plan to restore an old oak kitchen chair I found in my neighbor's barn. The finish is black and it needs repair but I think I can do all that. My question is about the seat. It too is black. It has a raised type of design in the center and where it is torn on one edge I would swear the seat is paper. Is that possible? How do I preserve/repair it or find a replacement?

Q. I received this crock from my mother-in-law many years ago. Is it an antique and the value?
